THM 101—Introduction to Massage Therapy (2,3)
Prerequisite: CPR Certification
The student will receive an introduction to the filed of therapeutic massage. Basic principles are presented along with the various application techniques of Swedish massage. Movement, breathing, and relaxation strategies are discussed along with guidelines for a whole-body massage. Gross anatomical structures of bones and major muscle groups are integrated with technique instructions as well as an introduction to the importance of massage ethics, sanitary concerns, and the contraindications of massage. THM 102—Massage Theory and Techniques I (3,5)
Prerequisites: THM 101 with a grade of “C” or better. BIO 115 with a grade of “C” or better or concurrent enrollment
This course is a first in a series of three courses in therapeutic massage techniques. Students learn the history and benefits of massage therapy. Massage is taught within an allied health context. Its relationship to wellness is a focal issue. Infection control and client safety procedures are emphasized. Massage techniques are demonstrated in relationship to specific anatomical regions, and after all body areas have been covered, integrated into a full body massage with therapeutic intentional tissue manipulation. Ethics of massage and communication with the client are an important part of this course. Fee

THM 110—Therapeutic Assessment (2,3)
Prerequisites: THM 101, THM 112 with a grade of “C” or better
The subject matter studied in this course consists of various conditions that affect the client’s ability to receive a massage with a therapist’s ability to give a massage treatment. Various methods of assessment will be studied and incorporated into the treatment plan.

THM 112—Massage Techniques II (3,5)
Prerequisites: THM 101, THM 112 with a grade of “C” or better
A continuation of basic techniques learned in THM 102. The range of techniques used is expanded to include more body movement and stretching as it pertains to helping muscle recover tone. Aids to massage will be covered such as cryotherapy and hydrotherapy and the use of the hydroculator. Sports massage and self-care exercises are major elements of the course. A variety of integrative modalities will be studied. Fee.

THM 113—Massage Therapy Practicum I (3,5)
Prerequisite: THM 112 with a grade of “C” or better
The practicum gives the student an opportunity to work on applying the techniques learned in THM 112. Documentation of both the initial interview and the session itself is required. Proper technique must be demonstrated. A twenty hour clinical assignment is required. Assigned by the program coordinator. Fee.

THM 122—Massage Therapy and Techniques III (3,5)
Prerequisites: THM 101, THM 102, THM 112, THM 113 with a grade of “C” or better
Students learn and apply assessment skills to isolate areas of need and then apply a specific therapeutic technique to facilitate a tissue recovery. The ability to use both specific and general applied techniques in a massage therapy session is emphasized. Fee.

THM 123—Massage Therapy Practicum II (3.5)
Prerequisites: THM 112, THM 113, THM 122 (with a grade of “C” or better)
This course will require the student to integrate planning, safety, clinical assessment, treatment, follow-up and documentation skills. Specific strokes related to assessment/palpation skills are integrated with over-all massage technique. Focus is on therapeutic progression and effectiveness. A look at different massage settings and populations finishes the course of instruction. A twenty hour clinical assignment is required. Assignment by program coordinator. Fee.
