South Suburban College presents
Introduction to China:
Hong Kong-South China Study Tour
July - August, 2006

South Suburban College (SSC), in association with the Illinois Consortium for International Studies and Programs (ICISP), presents the 2005 Summer Study Abroad Program, Introduction to China - a four-week study tour in Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, and Guangzhou.

PURPOSESChinese University of Hong Kong
1. To offer an on-site international education of China, a leading nation in the 21st Century;
2. To promote global awareness about China, a country rich with 5000 years of history, culture, and tradition; and
3. To expose students to a full range of perspectives in the history, culture, and humanities of China.

LOCATIONS
China (People's Republic of China) is situated in eastern Asia bounded by the Pacific Ocean in the east. It ranks as the third largest country in the world (next to Canada and Russia) with an area of 9.6 million square kilometers - one-fifteenth of the world's land mass.

Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, and Guangzhou are located in the Pearl River Delta of the Guangdong province in South China. Hong Kong, a British colony for 99 years, is renowned as Asia's world city mixing both Chinese and Western cultures. It has been recognized as a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China since July 1, 1997.

Macau, a Portuguese colony for nearly 160 years, became a SAR of China on December 20, 1999. It is a well-known city of tourism for the history of trade between the Portuguese and Chinese in the mid-sixteenth century, and for its gambling industry.

Guangzhou is the largest industrial and commercial city in South China. It is an important city for its history of business between the Chinese and Europeans in the mid-sixteenth century, and for the Chinese revolutions of the twentieth century.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
Students are required to register for HFA 205 (Humanities of China) and HIS 205 (History and Culture of China) at South Suburban College. By coordinating the central aspects of both courses, students are exposed to a full range of perspectives from which to gain a fundamental understanding of China. Subjects covered include Chinese art, music, language, literature, religion, philosophy, history, culture, geography, politics, economy, and society. The courses provide general knowledge about China as a whole, with a primary focus on Hong Kong and South China where the program itself will be conducted. Lectures are supplemented with educational site visits to enrich students' understanding of the phenomena studied in the classroom. All courses are taught in English.

Held in cooperation with Hong Kong America Center (HKAC), an organization which administers Fulbright programs in Hong Kong and co-sponsors programs of the Institute of International Education (IIE), students will have the opportunity to study with the outstanding faculty of the universities of Hong Kong, Macau, and Guangzhou, in addition to the daily site visits.
