Outcomes
Assessment is an ongoing process through which one determines, by
way of data collection and analysis, the extent to which each area
of the college is accomplishing its goals. Academic outcomes assessment
is aimed specifically at student learning. It involves stating specific
expectations and objectives, and setting high standards for student
achievement. Our goal is to make the academic assessment process routine
and cyclic, as outlined below:
• development
of plans to assess teaching effectiveness in the classroom, curricular
effectiveness within departments, and students’ attainment
of the general education objectives stated in the college catalog
• implementation
of these plans, and collection of relevant data
• analysis
of the results of each assessment
• recommendation
of strategies to faculty/departments designed to improve and support
student learning
• implementation
of college-wide initiatives designed to reinforce stated objectives
in every general education course
Academic
outcomes assessment can be more easily understood and implemented
by breaking it down into three components: classroom assessment, departmental/program
assessment, and assessment of general education. Each of these components
feeds into the others, intent being that by improving one, all three
will be positively impacted. For more information on each component
of academic outcomes assessment at South Suburban College, please
go to the “Assessment” section of this web site.
The
Outcomes Assessment Committee is comprised of faculty and academic
administrators dedicated to improving the quality of education at
South Suburban College. Our mission is to continually assess student
learning on three levels (classroom, program/departmental, and general
education), based on guidelines and recommendations from the Higher
Learning Commission (HLC).
