Workplace Skills Enhancement
Grant Program FAQ's

Her are some frequently asked questions about the Secretary of State Workplace Skills Enhancement Program:

What is a Workplace Skills Enhancement Grant?

It is money provided by the Illinois Secretary of State Office to assist Illinois companies in performing basic skills assessments, developing basic skills and/or implementing a skills enhancement for employees. Projects run from July 1 to June 30.

Why would we want to consider a Skills Enhancement Program for our company?

Low level foundation skills (the ability to read, write, comprehend and/or compute below a 10th grade level) can affect employee productivity, motivation and can limit their chances of promotion. Depending on an employee's area of responsibility, low foundation skills may also affect the quality of a product or service.

Who can qualify for a Grant?

Any Illinois company can apply, however, funding is limited and grants are awarded based on the number and quality of the applications submitted. South Suburban College has extensive experience in helping companies obtain SOS Grants.

What's the deadline for application?

Applications must be postmarked by March 15 each year. South Suburban College can provide assistance in completing the necessary forms but the process needs to begin at least three weeks before the deadline.

How much financial help is available?

Up to $10,000 can be used for expenses associated with the program such as instruction, materials and program coordination. Funds awarded must be matched (usually with employee time) equal to the amount of the grant.

What will South Suburban College help me do?

We can help you complete the grant application, perform employee assessments, design a workplace foundation skills program, deliver instruction and coordinate the program. We have extensive experience with the SOS Skills Enhancement Grant Program and would welcome the opportunity to develop an educational partnership with you.
