Transportation Warehouse Logistics Program

Overview

The rail industry and intermodal system are an integral part of the logistics industry. Chicago’s location and the fact that five of the top six railroads connect through Chicago ensure the future growth of this industry in our region.

Chicago is the third busiest intermodal hub in the world ranking behind Hong Kong and Singapore. One third of U.S. freight goes through Chicago. The Chicago-Cook is the nation’s busiest rail hub served by 21 intermodal facilities, 21 container depots and handling 8.8 million containers daily.

South Suburban College has partnered with Joliet Junior College, Kankakee Community College and Prairie State College to offer a 29-hour certificate program in Global Supply Chain Management.

What is Transportation Warehouse Logistics

Logistics is simply the transportation, storage, distribution, order fulfillment, product completion and supply chain management system that makes our economy go.

What will I learn in class?

Students will receive training from highly skilled instructors to gain a leg up in this rapidly growing industry. Residents of any of the four college districts may register for the first course, Transportation and Physical Distribution, at in-district tuition rates.

What is the employment outlook?

There are many jobs currently available in the logistics industry in our region. In addition, the demand for qualified workers in the transportation industry is expected to grow by an average of 23% over the next decade. Transportation and distribution is one of the region’s leading industries and currently accounts for 8% of the workforce.

Careers in the logistics industry can be very rewarding and can pay very well. Dispatchers, warehouse managers, fork lift truck drivers that are needed to move containers, local and long distance truck drivers move material as part of what logistics managers call the “supply chain,” along with a wide range of other job responsibilities that are currently in high demand, and will continue to be in demand for years to come.
