9/3/2009

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL - South Suburban College's tuition-free educational program "REBOUND" has assisted 132 unemployed residents get back into college this fall. The college waived over $104,000 worth of tuition and fees for these students, many of which were seeking a career change.

SSC originally implemented the tuition-free program during the summer semester for residents of College District 510 who have become unemployed since January 1, 2008. Forty-three (43) students took advantage of the summer slate of classes, while many waited for fall classes to begin and get back to school full-time. REBOUND students generated over 1,000 credit hours for the fall semester. In addition, a large number of prospective REBOUND students were able to get full financial aid when processed for the program. The REBOUND courses are offered in 18 academic areas ranging from healthcare to technology, within class sections that have the capacity for growth. Seats in these classes are offered on a first come, first served basis.

"We are extremely pleased with how the program has grown from the summer term through the fall," said Frank M. Zuccarelli, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. "Our college enrollment has grown significantly over the past year, but we were still able to accommodate a large number of people from the community who needed help getting back into school. Our Board of Trustees is committed to this program while the demand is still there from our residents who were let go from their jobs."
