South Suburban College looking for items for Dixmoor Historical Wall

10/1/2009

SOUTH HOLLAND-South Suburban College is looking for historical pictures or artifacts relating to the history of the Village of Dixmoor. The items will be used in the development of a Dixmoor Historical Wall at SSC within the next six months.

The Dixmoor Historical Wall will be the newest in a series of projects displaying old photographs, many from the late 1800's and early 1900's, maps, articles and other publications throughout the hallways of South Suburban College's Main Campus and the University & College Center. SSC has previously completed 17 Historical Walls that are dedicated to the communities that comprise College District 510.

Dave Bartlett, retired history professor of SSC, and Patrick Rush, Director of Public Relations, are working to acquire the historical items for the wall. Items are typically collected from local historical societies and residents. In addition to the old photographs, a brief history of each community is included with the displays.

"Dixmoor and all of the surrounding communities of South Suburban College are an integral part of our history," said Frank M. Zuccarelli, Chairman of the SSC Board of Trustees. "As an educational institution, it is only fitting that SSC serves as a permanent place to preserve this history for our students, and for the residents of our district."

The completed walls to date are: Burnham, Phoenix, Thornton, South Holland, Lansing, Harvey, Dolton, Riverdale, Calumet City, Tinley Park, Hazel Crest and East Hazel Crest at the Main Campus; and the Country Club Hills, Markham, Midlothian, Oak Forest and Posen Walls are located at the UCC.

For more information, or to donate pictures for the Dixmoor Wall, please contact Pat Rush at 708-596-2000, ext. 2697. Copies of photos will be made, and all original materials will be returned to their owners.
