PBI BLAST Program

Blacks Learning Academic Survival Techniques (BLAST) Program

SSC will use the PBI Grant to have a positive impact on our African American students by providing supportive services to those dealing with challenges in achieving academic success. We will also positively influence and improve student learning outcomes through this initiative. To support these student academic success outcomes, we have identified the following goals, activities and expected outcomes.

Requirements to participate in the program:

  • Must be African American
  • Must be a financial aid recipient
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours by the end of the add/drop period
  • Must achieve a minimum GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Must complete at least 2/3 of the courses enrolled in each semester

Incentives to participate in the program:

  • Students are assigned a Counselor to assist them in the academic planning and course registration process.
  • Students have a faculty Mentor to guide them through the college experience.
  • Students receive tutoring to enhance academic skill level
  • Students participate in workshops
  • Students attend field trips
  • Students attend college sponsored events
  • Students actively engaged and participating in the program will be eligible to compete for end of the semester (fall/spring) cash scholarships as well as summer course scholarships.
