Darrell Scott— Head Coach

Coach Scott is entering his 15th year of coaching women’s basketball at SSC. This is his first and only head coaching tenure in the women’s ranks. He has won over 270 games and compiled a 60% winning percentage. His teams have been recognized for their discipline, toughness, and defensive intensity. Coach Scott has led his team to 3 appearances at the NJCAA National Tournament (1999, 2000, and 2005). 

The 2005 team finished 8th at the NJCAA National Tournament.  He has coached 6 Juco All-Americans. Coach Scott had the luxury of finishing the 2006 season as the head coach for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Both teams finished as the Region 4 runners-up.

Coach Scott is a 1987 graduate of Grinnell College majoring in chemistry. He excelled in basketball and track and field competing in the 400 hurdles and long jump. He was a 3-year starter and was named All-conference. Prior to coaching the women at SSC, Coach Scott served 3 years as the men’s assistant coach at SSC.

Coach Scott is married to his beautiful wife Kimberly and has 3 sons: Darrell Jr., Christopher, and Gary. They reside in Chicago, IL.

Walt Shipman — Assistant Coach

  Walt, in his second season for the Bulldogs, comes to us after serving as assistant girl’s basketball coach at Rich Central High School and Marian Catholic High School.  At Marian Catholic he worked on the staff of Shannon Reidy, now Loyola University’s Head Basketball Coach and was a member of the staff that took the Spartans to the Illinois State Tournament. 


Walt lettered in football, basketball and baseball in high school and later earned Navy varsity letters while playing for the U.S. Naval Special Services. Walt organized and served as first President of the Babe Ruth League in the Quad Cities; managed baseball for 20 years first in the Quad Cities and then in Homewood while serving on Homewood’s Board; served two terms as President of the Homewood-Flossmoor High School Booster Club and currently is the Sponsor of the Homewood Small Fry Basketball program after coaching there for 15 years. He currently serves as Assistant Executive Director on the International Small Fry Board of Directors.

In 1984, after a successful career as a tax officer for a major Chicago based corporation, Walt founded and is currently the CEO and President of SMA Enterprises, Ltd., a tax software development firm.  A graduate of Northern Illinois University, he has post-graduate work in taxation at the Universities of Iowa, DePaul and Oklahoma.  Walt and his wife, Ruth, reside in Frankfort, IL.
